I am not funded by outside groups

There has been some inaccurate information put forth about funding for my campaign from an anti-testing activist.  Her web-page implies that my campaign is receiving funds from out of state organizations, which is completely untrue. All of the sources of funding for my campaign can be found by clicking here.  The vast majority of my funding comes from myself, my family, and my friends. I have also received funding from the Colorado Education Association.

This activist lists funders of a University of Washington based research center and implies they are associated with my political campaign.  I worked professionally with this research center when I ran a research center at the University of Colorado Denver.  The last time I worked with this research center was in 2011 around the question of how to help parents choose their schools.

I do not expect this anti-testing activist to support my campaign.  As stated on all of my campaign materials, a core value for me is Excellence for All.  Testing is a key tool in measuring whether or not all students are being served.  At the same time, I am the first to say that LPS students are over-tested, and that LPS should reduce the number of standardized tests it requires students to take.

Thank you again for your interest in my campaign.  I appreciate the effort people put into being informed voters – that is ALWAYS important in any election.  This source, however, is not accurate.

Campaign Finance

I filed my first report on campaign expenditures and donations of this election cycle.  I am very grateful to my family which has provided the large majority of my donations. My father donated in memory of his mother (my grandmother) who taught in Mapleton school district on the north side of the Denver metro area.   I also appreciate the support I am receiving from my friends and neighbors.

There was an issue with the timing of my October 2015 report.  The Secretary of State’s office that manages the on-line campaign finance reporting did not load the correct calendar into my candidate workspace. I was not notified of the October 13th deadline and when I became aware of the deadline I was unable to file a report until the 16th.  I filed the report as soon as I was able.  There was no violation or fine for late filing.

I am very excited about this campaign. I feel a lot of momentum.  Thank you for your support!

Safety and Mental Health Advisory Committee

Serving on the LPS Safety and Mental Health Advisory Committee (SMHAC) was a great experience. I really appreciate the opportunity to learn more about our schools, families and systems to support our kids.

Working on the SMHAC drove home to me how important it is to help support families when they have a child or other family member with a mental illness. Our family has dealt with chronic illness. It was amazingly helpful to me to have members of my community reach out and provide support as we worked to deal with managing illness.

I am attaching the final report from the SMHAC. I would welcome discussions about the recommendations and the work of the  committee.  I think we did some good work, but there is more to be done.

The Centennial Citizen has a new profile of Brian Ewert. I am excited to work with him.  I really like a couple of key points he makes:
-LPS has a good functioning School Board
-Politics do not belong in the Board room
-We need to make sure there are a variety of career and college options for our graduates.
